FENG SHUI IN CHINA

Many of my clients and friends have been asking how I am. I came back from China in late October with another Feng Shui Certification in China Studies. It was a beautiful place, but there were too many people for me (1.5 billion) and most were rude and push you out of whatever line you are standing in and you wind up in another line 10-20 feet away from where you originally started. Don't even get me started about their toilets which are situated level in the floor! The 5 star hotels had western toilets, but everywhere else - disaster!

We started in Beijing and wound up in Shanghai over the two week period taking five plane trips to various cities and a four day cruise down the Yangtze River. That was the highlight of the trip. Being with 30 other people on the tour was interesting and we did have to tiptoe around two "special" personalities, but all in all, it was an experience I will always remember. I had a lovely room mate who was nearly 20 years younger than me, but she was a treasure. As time went on, she found other friends to hang around with at night as did I (around my own age), but we did the tour together. I had gotten sick three times in China with the food and she was very thoughtful and stayed out longer each night so that I could rest. What else could I have asked for?

The sites we saw: the temples, the classes, the Forbidden City and I even climbed up to the first tower of the Great Wall - were unbelievable. I had to climb the Great Wall when I saw Mirriam, an 89 year old woman on our tour, made it up there and I couldn't be shown up. On her 90th birthday, she wants to go on an African safari. You go girl! So once you walk up the many mismatched steps which ranged from 6" to probably 1.5 ft. high, you could then buy a metal certificate swearing that you walked up the steps. It was an exhilarating experience. I probably will never go there again, but the lovely sites, the knowledge and the memories will never be forgotten. I will put some of my pictures from China on my site soon.

HEALTH

Shortly after I returned, I was rushed to emergency and stayed in the hospital for five days. I had emergency gall bladder surgery. I am doing well now and healing quickly. I had the best doctors and nurses any one could ask for in Chilton Memorial Hospital; I thank God for my speedy recovery. I had been misdiagnosed with acid reflux (on three meds for a year) and then probably a bleeding ulcer which was going to be checked out after my China trip. I was very sick for over two years, but we all must deal with our illnesses. Every test I took came out 100% perfect, but my gall bladder was very diseased, I had pancreatitis and the bile in my system had been backing up for months. The only reason I share this with you is because I found out by a test where a camera goes down my intestines and to the pancreas and gall bladder that I never had acid reflux nor a bleeding ulcer. I couldn't eat normally for over a year, but now I can eat everything once again. If you feel that you have something else wrong with you and the meds you are given are not working -- ask questions! This is what I learned from this crazy ordeal.

My family and friends had come to my house to cook, clean, vacuum, do laundry and just do anything that I needed. Family and friends are a blessing.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

It truly will be a Happy Thanksgiving for me and my family. I wish all of you the best of holidays -- and enjoy your family and friends!

Animal Rescue

Hi, all you animal lovers. This is pretty simple... Please tell ten friends to tell ten today! The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals. It takes less than a minute (How about 20 seconds) to go to their site and click on the purple box 'fund food for animals' for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.
Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

Happy Halloween!

I thought I'd share a bit of the history of this fun holiday with you this month. Did you know that Halloween originated in Europe? And that it was created by the Pagans and the Celts? Did you know that the Pagans worshipped Earth and Sky similar to the Native Americans? (Nope theyre not witches and devil worshipers). Did you know that Halloween was originally a family or adult celebration in honor of the harvest? The folks that inhabited a good part of the United Kingdom, Ireland and parts of northwest France (as they are today) developed this holiday probably close to 2,000 years ago as a festival called Samhain, which is pronounced sow' ehn, and means "summer's end." This big party was to thank mother earth for the harvest, to signify the end of summer, the start of the dark months - the winter season - and was originally celebrated on November 1. In the 800s, the Christian church created a new holiday to compete with the already popular Samhain called All Saints Day or All Hallows. Did you know that Hallow means Saint (or one who is holy)? This "new" Christian holiday had the Pagans pushing back their holiday to October 31, and it became known as All Hallows Evening or Hallow e'en. So, while Halloween is actually a summers end celebration and All Saints day honors the dead, it is Halloween that has gotten the spooky rap! This year on 10/31, I will honor mother nature and my garden (or harvest) by bringing in some seeds and saving them for next years garden. How will you celebrate Samhain this year? Blessings in your start to fall - I look forward to seeing you at some of the many events happening the last quarter of this year!

TIME SHARE RENTAL AVAILABLE IN WILLIAMSBURG, VA – NOVEMBER 9 – 16, 2007

Vikki owns a beautiful time share just 10 minutes outside of Historic Williamsburg, VA. It is two separate apartments (one above the other, but separate entrances). Each sleeps 6. The unit downstairs has a Jacuzzi. Each unit has a master bedroom with attached bathroom, bedroom with twin beds, a kitchen, dining area and large living room with fold out couch/double bed. Another bathroom is in the hallway. Linens are included as well as toaster, pots, pans, utensils, dishes, etc. There is no additional clean up fee. All you do is pull off the sheets and leave them by the door in a plastic bag for housekeeping and you can just get in your car and leave. This is a fabulous opportunity to see Historic Williamsburg in the off season when the tour buses are not full of tourists and you can walk around the historic property at a leisurely pace. Last year Vikki and her guests saw every building, theatrical recreations, church concerts, and tours in just three days and then took the rest of the time to visit plantations, Historic Jamestown and local attractions.

If you would like more information about renting one or both time shares, please call Vikki at 973-492-3110 or email her at:
Starscape50@aol.com
. The cost is $400 per apartment to cover yearly maintenance costs. It’s a secluded, large development (but just outside of town) with pool, tennis, local attractions, purchase tickets on the property at a discount, restaurants on the premises and just a peaceful and contemplative environment. More information? Just ask: 973-492-3110. Celebrate the 400th anniversary celebration at Jamestown! Queen Elizabeth was there this past summer.

The new dollar coins will be coming out shortly. I was informed by many students, clients and friends, that the words IN GOD WE TRUST have been removed from this coin. Most people who believe in God, Goddess, Spirit Guides, Guardian Angels or any spiritual existence at all, will be boycotting this coin. Ask for paper money when getting change. Hopefully, this will put this coin out of circulation quickly. How do you feel about it?

Feng Shui for Autumn!

By Vikki Anderson

Autumn is a wonderful time to clean out your house of all the things you no longer need, want or like. Many garage or yard sales are going on in local neighborhoods and you can make some extra cash by getting rid of your “treasures.” You never know what people are looking for and you may just have that odd piece of furniture, kitchen accessory/appliance or accent piece they have been looking for. This is also a great time to make room in your home, garage, basement and attic for the upcoming holidays. Remember, with the weather getting cooler and eventually colder with snow, your family needs room to relax, read a book or magazine, write out the bills, enjoy each other, watch TV or play video games, and do homework. They need a comfortable and organized living space.

With the new energy of the season, it is important to clear out the summer energy and have a more relaxed and calming environment. Many people rearrange furniture, change bed linens to glorious fall colors and change curtains in every room. Any alterations bring a change of energy with them so be sure that you feel comfortable, happy, relaxed and stress free after you redecorate or update your room’s look. If you are tired of the same old curtains or comforters, change them. If the same worn out throw pillows are a site for sore eyes, perhaps going to flea markets, garage sales or local stores who are having sales would be a good alternative. It will make you feel re-energized as you bring in new energy of the item and the color into your home.

A quick reference to colors:

The bold color brings in more vibrant and dynamic energy. The pastel of the color brings in the energy in a softer, more harmonious level. Remember that these colors also work if you are wearing them as clothing or accessories.

Black

Most teens wear black and now we know why they act the way they do! Black represents depression, upset, negativity, sadness, and feeling out of place or without a connection, despair, misery, hopelessness, dejection and melancholy.

Blue

This soothing color helps you express emotions, empathy, sympathy, compassion and sensitivity. Nice calming color for a bedroom.

Gray

This color is not recommended for rooms since it brings with it fears, doubts, worries, anxieties, being over whelmed, confused, lost, and indecisive.

Green

Peaceful and calm color. Brings in prosperity and abundance, financial security, fertility and growth. It gets projects “growing” in the right direction; it is a nurturing and supportive color.

Pink

This refreshing color brings harmony, peace, joy, self confidence, love, happiness and everything that will make you happy.

Purple

This is the most spiritual color which has the highest vibrational rate. Purple brings in esoteric interest and study, philosophy and honors all traditions. Metaphysical or spiritual knowledge is brought through this color for you to use or to pass it along to others who could use the knowledge and insight from Above.

Red

Assertive, dynamic, passionate and energetic color. Motivates people who are procrastinators. Brings vibrant energy, makes one self motivated, active and lively. Too much red can cause tempers and anger. I do not recommend this color if you are looking for a restful or peaceful environment.

Tan/Browns

This section includes beige, mauve, orange, and khaki as well. This is a very grounded, focused, stable and organized color. Tan, etc., brings a good foundation and is very secure. It helps you stay connected to Mother Earth, keeps your feet on the ground and makes one very persistent.

White

This is the sucker color. It brings energy of being too good, caring, loving, kind, generous, honest, trust worthy and doing everything for others and nothing for you. Eventually, you will become a doormat or have no life of your own since you are too busy helping others. Set some boundaries. (Never paint the inside of a house white if you want to sell it – it is a cold color and puts people off). I tell my students never to wear white underclothes as your foundation for the day is to be a sucker and have everyone take advantage of you! Wear more beige!

Yellow

This color stimulates the mind. It activates intelligence, logic, analytical and methodical thought and is a great color for a library, place where children study and where common sense is required.

Here are a few ways to bring in positive (chi) energy into your yard and home.

  1. Put some beautiful fall potted plants on your front steps or walkway. This invites the outside into your home and allows the beautiful colors to attract family and friends to visit more.
  2. Hang beautiful chimes from trees, your deck or house gutters for a melodious sound to relax and calm you.
  3. Hang up whirl-i-gigs to promote positive chi to circulate around your property and remove any stagnant areas of dead or dying chi. There are many decorative ones for autumn, Thanksgiving, Christmas or any holy holiday or perhaps just winter scenes as it gets closer to December.
  4. Plant bulbs for next year’s beautiful gardens! To correctly place the right color in the right area of your yard or garden, follow the ba gua colors (see http://www.vikkianderson.com/ under Feng Shui).
  5. Burn white sage throughout your home, closets, bathroom, cellar, attic and around the house to ensure negative energy or negative chi is removed while keeping your windows in your home open at least 2” to allow the negativity to escape from your surroundings.
  6. Place 60 MM aurora borealis crystals in windows that get the morning sun so that rainbows will dance on your ceiling and walls. Each room should have many colors in it for balanced energy.
  7. Get rid of things you no longer need, want or like, so that you will have a clutter free space to enjoy and come home to each evening without feeling overwhelmed by the clutter.
  8. A fresh coat of paint will do wonders for your space and your mood. Choose the proper color for the area of the ba gua you are painting; if you can’t, add a few decorative touches like pillows, books, candleholders, afghans, statues or paintings with the required colors in them.
  9. Buy bamboo pieces. I use them as curtain rods in every room so the auspicious energy is blessing every room. If you can’t use them as curtain rods, stick one piece (two in the partnership area) leaning in a corner as a decorative piece. It certainly brings attention to a space.
  10. Let the light into your home. Many people put heavier drapes and curtains for the autumn/winter months, but be sure to open them during the day to allow energy, opportunities and good luck into your home.
  11. Purchase a few Himalayan salt lamps, candle holders or prosperity bowls so their medicinal powers (helps with allergies, headaches, insomnia, depression and many more illnesses) and place them around your home to ensure your family’s continued good health.

Himalayan Salt Lamps may be purchased on http://www.vikkianderson.com/ – check out the On Line Store. A full assortment of Feng Shui cures will be available on the site soon. For a private Feng Shui consultation, call Vikki at 973-492-3110 or email her at Starscape50@aol.com.

Banding Birds - A Real Passion

by Vikki Anderson

My daughter drove me to her volunteer job on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - something that she will be doing for the rest of her life - she is an ornithologist and loves birds. I think birds are pretty too, but the dedication that she has for them goes above and beyond. She picked me up at 5:30 AM. She said that she usually leaves at 4:30 AM but was being considerate of her mom. (Thank you!) It was like another world out there at that hour. It was about an hour's drive, but I found it easy to fall asleep in the car for the most part when her Incubus CDs weren't blasting, but then we settled on some nice Celtic music so I did get some sleep.

I met Laura Obiso who was catching up on some work at the observatory before going home to get her new Delaware Water Gap book off to the publishers. She was delighted that my daughter was there to band birds today and said I would be in for a treat.

What Ms. Obiso doesn't know about me is that -- I am not a Nature Princess. My idea of roughing it is the Holiday Inn, but my daughter jumped into Laura's jeep (in case we ran into bears!) because we had to open the nets. It was a long process to unwind the nets and make sure all of the water came out of them so that they would be invisible to the bird population, but soon they were all ready to go.

Before we even made it back to the observatory, she saw several birds caught in the nets and had to carefully remove them and put them into cotton bags. (They need these cotton bags to transport the birds to the observatory after capture so I will sew up a bunch for them with tons of different material I have in my attic). I had the honor of holding the birds so that they would not be unduly traumatized by the bumpy jeep ride through the woods (unlike me which was traumatized! I could only imagine a safari!!). When we made our way back to the observatory, my daughter measured their wings, found out their fat content, labeled them male/female or unknown, their species, their age and then we recorded the banding ring number that would go on their leg. She was so gentle with these tiny animals that I was so proud of her. She banded them and then released them back into the wild.

We did this many times. One had to revisit the nets every half an hour. When I asked why, Cailin said because they should not be unduly traumatized for a longer period and of course there were predators in the woods. There was a cat lurking around, but no bears I am happy to say. Everyone made it safely to the observatory to be counted (Cailin recorded 43 birds) measured, etc., and then released without incident. Apparently, you can only do this until around 9:30 AM because the sun gets too hot from that time on. Keeping the birds in the nets under those conditions can be dangerous for the birds, so it's just not done.

This is an all volunteer staff of only two regulars now, but they need so many more volunteers. One does not have to be a bird expert, but there are so many other jobs that those with a little extra time can do for this wonderful cause. Of course, they also need contributions for equipment to keep the birds safe and to replace the old nets when they are no longer safe for the birds.

If you can help either by a donation or your time, won't you contact Laura Obiso below and see what you can do for our little flying friends? Thanks so much.

The September 11, 2007 Solar Eclipse in Virgo

by Vikki Anderson

What an easy way to remember the next eclipse! That date stands for so much suffering and sorrow over the last six years that I'm sure our country will never forget 9-11. However, it is our next solar eclipse. Friends, students, clients, family and readers of my Inner Realm Horoscope Column always ask me to remind them what to do on an eclipse.

Here are my general guide lines:

Even though the eclipse is in Virgo (and will be memorable and lucky for most Virgo's) at 8:44 AM, all signs will benefit by what they do on the whole day! Consider the day like being a video that has been taken of you and your experiences on that day which will be played over and over again until the next eclipse. All the happy times, the goof ups, the problems, the miscommunication, the issues....everything will continually be repeated. If you get a speeding ticket on the eclipse, give up driving! Just kidding. Be very careful as the universe will have you pegged as the one who will be getting more than their fair share of speeding tickets.

(The next two solar eclipses are February 7 in Aquarius and August 1, 2008 in Leo).

Some Do's!

This is a good time to be with family and friends you wish to have in your life more during the next six months, go out, have fun, spend more time with your significant other and/or children.
Put money in the bank if it is your intent to save more.
Read, write emails or letters that you have been procrastinating on, relax, watch TV, go to work, buy a little something for yourself so that you have more money than just for bills.
Go to the movies, a museum, an art gallery or the theater if you want to bring these things into your (and your family's lives) life for this time period.
Go on a first date - good or bad, you'll know on that day and won't have to waste time if it is not going anywhere.
Be with your loved one if you wish to have him or her more in your life.
Have a romantic evening at home.
Buy a little something for your significant other so that he or she will feel special for the next six months. Imagine if you receive a gift on the eclipse? That would mean that you would be getting more surprises until the next eclipse.Make it a peaceful, harmonious and perfectly optimistic day.
Do go for a manicure or pedicure.
Get a haircut or your hair colored.
Spend a peaceful day at a local spa - the eclipse is on a Tuesday so you should be able to get discounts.
Use discount coupons for extra savings for the next six months.
For those trying for a baby, this is the ideal opportunity to get moving in the right direction!Start a diet or new exercise regiment.
Eat more healthy foods.
Send out a resume if you are looking for a new job.
Look at the Personals if you are looking for a new romantic significant other; that will at least put the intent in the next six months.
If you are on vacation during the eclipse, you will have more money and time to take vacations.

Some Don'ts!

Do not pay bills or your intent is to continue to pay bills for that time period.
No doctor appointments.
No medical procedures, such as the dentist, blood work, any medical tests or surgery.
No shopping and spending as if money is going out of style. Wait a few days after the eclipse for large purchases.
No cleaning the house or apartment unless you are really serious about cleaning. I had started cleaning my house 4 eclipses ago (2 years) and am still cleaning out and throwing away items from the garage, basement, and attic. The house is nearly redecorated and done...maybe by the February eclipse??
If you haven't been speaking to someone for some time, why not try a call or email on that day to patch things up or it will be at least six months before the two of you get back together or speak again.
If you argue with someone on that date, make up as quickly as possible so hard feelings don't fester.
Do not take your pet to the vet unless absolutely necessary or you will be visiting the vet regularly.
If you purposely stay home from work, you will most likely get down sized and laid off because you were not at work.

These are just some of the suggestions that I use for this day but of course it can be changed for your life style and what you want in the next six months. Most of all, have a productive, interactive and happy day. Share this date with those you know and love as there are only two days per year when you can actually set the tone for the next six months and it would be a shame to miss it.

Classes at Soul Journey in Butler, NJ

Navigating the Spirit World:
Identify Your Personal Spirit Allies and
Learn to Communicate and Work with Them

Do you need a guardian angel? How about a fairy godmother? Perhaps there’s a goddess who resonates deeply in your soul, or an ancestor who consistently comes to your aid in a crisis? Maybe you’ve already made contact with an angel, goddess, or spirit but would like to be able to maintain that relationship more consistently and beneficially? The ultimate, most potent magic spells and rituals involve working with spirits, those mysterious, sacred, powerful beings who have fascinated, enthralled, and, maybe most crucially, helped people out of tight spots since that ol’ time immemorial. Blending magic and spirituality, these spells and rituals involve coming face-to-face with the sacred. This is the most primeval and universal magic of all: common to all people on every inhabited continent (at least, once upon a time). These spells/rituals/relationships are safe; no demonic possession involved, no selling your soul to the devil. Instead, this ancient tradition of magical spirituality emerges from love, respect, and mutual benefit.

Join Judika Illes, author of Pure Magic and The Element Encyclopedia of 5000 Spells, for a workshop at SoulJourney. Learn how to:

*Discover the identities of your own personal spiritual allies and guides;
*Differentiate between different types of spirits;
*Distinguish between spirits to welcome and those to avoid;
*Communicate with the spirits;
*Recognize when the spirits are trying to communicate with you.

This workshop is suitable for all levels, for those who can already identify their spirits as well as those who are brand new to the concept.

Offered on Sunday, September 9 from 12-2pm, tuition is $50.00. Judika’s books will be available for sale and she will sign them after the workshop.

Judika Illes began her magical career early when, at age 6, she first caught sight of a deck of Tarot cards, promptly fell madly in love and hasn’t looked back since. Judika has been living, breathing, studying, and teaching the various magical arts ever since. After many years of study, Judika began reading cards professionally in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1988. Shortly thereafter, she moved to California where this formerly intensely urban native New Yorker became immersed in botanical magic. Los Angeles’ lush climate offered the opportunity for an intensive study of hands-on herbalism. While in Los Angeles, Judika worked as a telephone psychic for several years. She obtained a Certification in Therapeutic Aromatherapy in 1999, then taught beginner and intermediate courses in Aromatherapy for the Australasian College of Herbal Studies. Feng Shui Cures – How Fast Do They Work?

by Vikki Anderson

I have been working with Feng Shui Cures for over ten years now and each time I Feng Shui a new space, I am surprised at the rapid change of energy. Each space is different, of course, but it seems that I am often asked to place cures in a space that truly needs help, as was the case with the example I will be talking about below.

My parents live in a very nicely maintained apartment complex. Their neighbor who lives only two doors away is a lovely young woman named Patty who is in her mid-forties; she came to New Jersey after the Katrina disaster. She has been in New Jersey for nearly a year now without any type of permanent employment. Her savings were dwindling fast and she needed a job.

Patty is a determined young woman who was looking for work, day after day, with one disappointment after another. She had gotten a two-month job which ended abruptly and she has been looking for work ever since. Then she was promised a job and it fell through. This seemed to be a very difficult and disappointing pattern.

My mother had asked me to drop in on Patty and see if there was anything I could do with Feng Shui to make her life easier and to help her find a good paying job, so of course I said yes. The next evening, I had come prepared with a bag of Feng Shui cures including ba gua (octagon or eight-sided) mirrors; 60mm round, leaded crystals on a red string; bamboo flutes; suggestions to open blinds and the placement of a mirror opposite the entrance to let opportunities in. I also suggested a half-moon or circular black rug to pool the energy in her career area, which she immediately purchased.

Her apartment was set up for failure. The bathroom and a deep closet filled with cleaning fluids, vacuum and laundry (which needed to be ironed or washed) were in the wealth area, and even though there was not an issue with clutter (as it was probably the cleanest and most organized home I had ever been in), the energy was stagnant and heavy.

The next evening I went back into her apartment for the blessing of the space with her help. One must always be involved in the blessing of the house or office to make it effective. Even though she did not understand what we were doing, she wholeheartedly participated and I must say, it had outstanding results.

On her daily interview trail, she received two interviews for that week. The next day, another two interviews. Out of them, she received three great offers and took the best one. She is starting work on Monday.

She thanked me for changing the opportunities in her home and baked me delicious M&M cookies. It was a nice surprise.

My real joy is changing peoples’ lives for the better with just a few “cures.” They are not hard to do nor change your lifestyle in any way, but there usually is a need to change the flow of energy or to invite opportunities into your home.

AFFORDABLE WEBSITE DESIGN SOLUTIONS

Synchronicity is a wonderful thing – two months ago, I found out that my website designer was retiring and would no longer be available to take care of my website. (I thank Joyce for many years of great service, and I wish her all the best in her new life!) But before I even had time to start to worry about what to do regarding my website, a fabulous thing happened: Literally the very next day my life long friend informed me that a close friend’s son, (Raymond Williams) had just started his own website business. Talk about excellent timing!

Raymond is a brilliant young man who has already achieved amazing things in his 22 years. And, like many of his generation, he understands computers and the internet in a way those like me who grew up before the age of computers never could. Technical things that are completely confusing and over my head are as natural as breathing to Raymond.

He has recently finished an impressive tour of duty in the United States military service where he was a navigator for a large battleship, and he will be starting college soon at Syracuse University. He is putting himself through college by doing website design (yes, the Navy gave him some money for school, but it does not cover all his tuition or living expenses). Therefore, those of us who need website help are very fortunate that he is now available to work with us.

Raymond Williams offers FULL-SERVICE website capabilities: Website Design, Monthly Maintenance and Assistance with Your Site, and he can even help you Promote your site. If you do not yet have a website, Raymond can have a site up and running for you in just a matter of days (at the BEST price I have ever seen!), and can take care of all aspects of your website so that you never have to worry about a thing. I am so grateful to have Raymond as my new webmaster – he has already given me fantastic ideas on how my website can be improved, and I am very excited to move forward with this.

If you already have a website, Raymond can help you optimize and manage your site. He can also help you get more traffic to your site (which is great – most website designers don’t do this). His hourly rates for these services are VERY affordable. Even if you just want to make a few upgrades to an existing site on a one-time basis, he can do literally anything you need. I’ve seen sites he’s designed, and his knowledge and ability is incredible.

If you have a small business, or are self-employed, or even if you just want to have your own website for personal reasons, but you lack the computer know-how to do these things yourself, Raymond may just be the answer to your prayers. I feel like he was definitely the answer to mine.

Below is some information Raymond sent me about his website services. If you are thinking about getting a website done, I highly recommend that you contact him as soon as possible, for two reasons: Number one is that his incredibly low prices are a special introductory offer, meaning only people who contact him within the next few months will get to take advantage of this low, low price. And number two, he can only take on a limited number of clients before his schedule is too full. So jump on this opportunity if you need any website services. This is the best deal I’ve ever seen, and I know from personal experience.

Tarot Card Workshop Controversy at West Milford, NJ Library

By Vikki Anderson

I had scheduled a tarot card workshop for teens at the West Milford Public Library on July 25, 2007. I was shocked when I was called a few weeks after booking and told that there had been 32 complaints on the nature of the program. Though I have been teaching and lecturing about metaphysics and parapsychology for over 36 years without a similar issue, my first response to the library worker was, “If you would like to cancel the program, I am fine with that.”

The Library did not want to cancel the program, as I was informed they had never been forced to cancel one before and wouldn’t be bullied into it now. I was glad about their decision; I love teaching teens, as they are eager to learn and are very bright – they catch on quickly. Hosting my lecture after these complaints was a bold move for the West Milford Library and says great things about the character of those who work there.

On the afternoon of my program, there were people picketing outside of the library. I thought this was pretty amusing, actually. I believe these individuals were fundamentalists who expect the whole world to revolve around their beliefs and leave no leeway for the belief systems of others. I, however, am not easily intimidated and with the help of West Milford Library staff members, one of whom was an ex-student, I was escorted into Town Hall where my program was to be held.

Town Hall filled up quickly. Besides the enrolled teens, several of their parents stayed through the program, and the Town Council members were present. A few of the picketers looked on as well, feverishly taking notes. I felt a bit like a celebrity, but more-so, I felt sad that there were people in this world who had nothing better to do than picket harmless divination practices because “it was the work of the Devil.” For the record, I don’t even believe in this “Devil” character.

I brought extra tarot decks with me so the teens could follow along with my lecture and actually have a chance to work with the cards. I stayed an extra 45 minutes over my contracted time because I wanted the kids to have fun reading the cards themselves. The teens asked intelligent questions and really seemed to have a grasp of the basics of tarot which delighted me. Usually, I certify students in “The Totally Tarot Method” (based on my book) after 18 hours of lessons, but to be fair to these kids, they really were great and eager to learn, and they were clearly enjoying themselves. I was so honored to have been there to teach them.

The Library Staff thanked me for coming to their library, then insisted on accompanying me to my car, concerned that the picketers might still have been there to harass me, or worse, that they had damaged my car. Luckily, that was not the case. I went home and continued with my usual day’s appointments for tarot and astrology readings, house blessings, and Feng Shui consultations.

Two weeks later, friends brought two articles to my attention that had been written by West Milford residents. One was a letter to the editor which denounced tarot as the work of the Devil (sigh) and explained how she used to be a spiritualist but someone came into her life and actually threw away all of her new age books, tarot cards, and a Ouija board. She expounded on how she had even pulled a card a day to make decisions and how it wasn’t until this person came into her life that she found Jesus, realized the error of her ways, and realized that the Devil had a hold on her through the occult.

I felt so sorry for this woman, so easily led out of the enlightening world of metaphysics and parapsychology that shaped my life. She had obviously been a bit of a fanatic, since readers do not pull tarot cards to make every-day decisions and rely on common sense for most situations. That and her allowance of another person to throw away her prized possessions made me wonder how much of a blind follower this woman was. Did she not have a grasp on reality? Could she not make a decision for herself? Did someone else have to come into her life to save her? I understood that she had Jesus in her life now, but did that mean that everyone had to believe in Jesus? I am an interfaith minister and believe in many types of faith – and feel everyone should believe as they see fit, provided their belief neither harms anyone, nor infringes on the right of others to do the same. I wondered if she was aware that the largest metaphysical and astrological library in the world is in the Vatican, but figured this fact would be lost on her regardless.

The second article went on about how tarot is a religion into which one had to be initiated. That was news to me. I don’t remember getting initiated; however, I guess you never know with the Devil – it may have happened in my sleep! I wonder who the God/dess of the tarot is supposed to be… Anyway, the writer of the article was angry that his vote at the Town Council not to pay me my minimal fee for the workshop was overruled by others on the Board and thought that town funds should not be used to push religion on the town’s youth. There was some complaint about the semantics of calling my program a “Tarot Workshop” versus a “Tarot Card Workshop” – the difference is lost on me. Furthermore, someone had apparently complained about a clergyman saying a prayer at a town meeting and a decision was made to avoid prayer in which Jesus’ name was mentioned. As he felt tarot was a religion, he felt it should similarly be abolished. While I agree with the town council decision to avoid prayer centered on a specific religion, as that alienates all people with other belief systems – I hate to sound like a broken record here, but tarot is a far cry from being considered a religion, so I don’t see his point.

In response to this man’s assertion that town funds should not be used to teach tarot, I ask where the money comes from for all the functions the library hosts. There were 15 teens present at my lecture and unless they were all from a homeless shelter, I would assume that each of their parents pays property taxes – taxes that supply these town funds. I believe each of these tax-payers has the right to have their children benefit from their contribution, don’t you? Furthermore, I would assume that if a parent had a problem with what I was teaching their children, they would have pulled their child out of the class. Instead, I received a round of applause at the end of the lecture and a hearty thank you from the West Milford Library.

Now, I’m all for free speech, but my concern is with people making comments with no knowledge about this subject whatsoever. They not only don’t study tarot, but it seems they’ve barely looked into it at all before writing very negative complains and allegations. Tarot is simply a form of divination, just like astrology, numerology, or palm-reading. It isn’t based on any religion whatsoever and certainly does not constitute one on its own accord. There are spiritual cards within the standard deck, but the entity to which they refer has to be based on the belief system of the Querent (the person who the reading is for). It can be God, Goddess, a spirit guide, a guardian angel, the Source, the One, the All, general universal energy, the Alpha and the Omega, or whatever the Querent believes in.
_____________________________________________________________________________

I visited Salem, Massachusetts in July of 2006. It was truly startling to see how several young girls in a fundamentalist society started a frenzy of panic and accusations which left many innocent people hanged and wrongfully imprisoned because of prejudice and misinformation. The last comment made by our tour-guide on the Salem Witch Museum tour was that this type of thing could never happen again in America because we have learned from our past mistakes. Well, West Milford residents, apparently not everyone has learned from past mistakes. Stop going on witch hunts and keep your fundamentalism to yourself.

This is America, “land of the free.” If I wish to practice the art of tarot, astrology, metaphysics, Feng Shui, hypnotherapy, Reiki, crystal therapy, palmistry, numerology, aromatherapy, or anything else, no one can stop me, especially not foolish letters to the editor in a small town paper. I didn’t even send a rebuttal, as it’s completely not worth by time, but this is my blog so I thought I’d vent my frustrations here in the company of like minded people.
